Why do I need Bottled Water when I have tap water?
Consistent quality and taste are two of the principle differences
between bottled water and tap water. Quality is in every container
of bottled water. It is consistent because it is inspected and
monitored by governmental, private laboratories and must meet
the highest standards of the International Bottled Water Association
www.bottledwater.org.
Unfortunately, tap water can be inconsistent – at times it may
be palatable, while other times it is not. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency has reported that hundreds of tap water sources
have failed to meet minimum standards. Another factor to consider
is the distance tap water has to travel before it arrives in
your home and the possibility of the contaminants it may contact
along the way.
Taste is the other major reason people prefer bottled water
versus tap water. Chlorine, the most common chemical used to
disinfect tap water, can leave an unpleasant aftertaste. If
your water tastes good, you will be more likely to drink the
daily requirement of eight 8 oz glasses per day. You may drink
even more!
Other unpleasant tastes in tap water are caused by large doses of minerals
that have dissolved in the water. Blue – Green stains are due to copper
contamination; colonized microorganisms usually cause pink or rainbow stains.
Other contaminants in tap water include volatile organic chemicals (VOC’s are
usually pesticides), nitrates (decomposing human or animal waste), lead (from
plumbing) or even parasites.
